Question 1

What is the difference between a serger and an overlocker?

Accepted Answer

There isn't one, they're the same machine. "Serger" is the term used in the US and Canada, while "overlocker" is the term used in Australia and the UK.

Question 2

Do I need both a sewing machine and an overlocker?

Accepted Answer

Most sewists eventually use both, but you only need a sewing machine to get started. Add an overlocker once you're sewing garments or knits regularly and want faster, more professional seam finishes.

Question 3

Can an overlocker replace a sewing machine?

Accepted Answer

No. An overlocker can't sew buttonholes, install zips, or handle general construction. It's a specialised finishing tool, not a replacement for a general-purpose sewing machine.

Question 4

Is an overlocker hard to thread?

Accepted Answer

It has a steeper learning curve than a sewing machine because of its multiple threads and loopers, but colour-coded guides on most modern models make it manageable after a few practice threadings. Air-threading models remove most of the difficulty, at a higher price.

Question 5

Can you quilt with an overlocker?

Accepted Answer

Not for standard quilting construction, piercing a quilt top needs a sewing machine's lockstitch. Some quilters use an overlocker to quickly finish raw fabric edges before piecing, but it's a supplementary tool here, not a primary one.

Question 6

How much does an overlocker cost in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Entry-level overlockers typically start around $200–$300, with solid mid-range options between $600 and $1,500, and premium air-threading models from $1,500 up. Prices vary by retailer and season, so it's worth comparing Spotlight, Lincraft, and authorised dealer pricing before buying.

Question 7

What's the best first machine for a beginner?

Accepted Answer

A sewing machine, every time. It's the more versatile tool and the one every sewing project needs at some point, whereas an overlocker is a specialist addition once you know what kind of sewing you'll be doing most.
